The first project of the year revolved around what it means to be "American." We spent a couple of weeks reading works from various influential American writers and poets, with the unit culminating in an essay answering the driving question with evidence from the aforementioned pieces of writing and the selection and presentation of an "artifact" meant to represent our identity as Americans. Our driving question was, "How American am I?" The Essential Skills tested were the following: EKS #1: Sentence Structure - I can write with advanced sentence structure: parallel structure, correct punctuation, and proper flow. EKS #5:Thesis - I can craft a sophisticated thesis that includes the topic, assertion, and importance of a deep and in-depth argument. EKS #6: Organization - I can appropriately organize my essay based on a clear, organized thesis. EKS #7: Evidence - I can consistently back up ideas and claims with well-chosen evidence and examples from the novel. EKS #8: Commentary - I can write advanced commentary that offers analysis directly linking the quote to the thesis/argument, and often addresses the author's intention, too.
